Farm Tales by Marjolyn Winkel

The first thing Frans did was built a barn. With no experience in building, he was given much needed advice by a Dutchman working for Lumberworld on Quadra, who was a friend of a friend. And when the barn was finished, we moved with our two and one year old sons, our animals and all our worldly possessions in February 1969, a bitterly cold winter, to our new home…

Marjolyn Winkel, nee Paulus was born and raised in Indonesia. As a teenager she was sent to the Netherlands to finish her high school education. After getting her teaching diploma, she went to England as an au-pair and got her Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language from one of the English Schools for Foreign Students in Cambridge. She returned to the Netherlands and after a short teaching career married Frans Kars Winkel and started her life as a landed emigrant in Victoria, Canada, where both their sons were born.

She and her husband have lived on their Central Saanich hobby farm, where little has changed, since 1969. In the fast changing world around them their farm has become a cameo in time and is a popular destination on the Lochside Trail for locals and tourists alike.  Amazon’s Marjolyn Winkel Page
